ABOUT US

What is the autonomy project?

The Autonomy Project exists to create safe, inclusive spaces where marginalized communities can thrive.

OUR STORY

The Autonomy Project began as a dream shared by five passionate fems and thems who believed that true community is built on respect, inclusion, and shared purpose. Each of us came from different backgrounds—artists, educators, activists, and healers—but we were united by a single goal: to create a space where everyone, especially those who are marginalized or misunderstood, could find safety, connection, and joy.

The founders were frustrated and saddened by how fractured and tribal the communities in Ohio had become, and knew there had to be a way to heal the rifts and bring people together again. But how? It would take a monumental act and something so inherently unique that people wanted to be apart of to get them to see their similarities more than their differences.

In 2022, Alexandra Snow, one of our co-founders, took a leap of faith and purchased a building, holding it in trust for the community. This wasn’t just a financial decision; it was an act of love and commitment to a vision we had all nurtured together. Alexandra believed, as we all did, that a space built with intention could be transformative—an anchor for those who needed it most and a launching pad for those ready to soar.

We started with modest goals: hosting intimate gatherings, small workshops, and a few creative events. But word spread quickly, and what began as a handful of people gathering to dream soon grew into a vibrant community. People came not just for the events but for the sense of belonging that filled every corner of the space.

Over time, the Autonomy Project became more than just a building or a place to gather. It became a beacon for the LGBTQIA+ community, sex workers, creatives, and advocates for social justice. It became a haven for those navigating a world that often marginalizes their identities, desires, or dreams.

Every step of our journey has been fueled by the community itself. Volunteers transformed our space with their hands and hearts. Educators and advocates stepped up to share their knowledge. Together, we built something bigger than ourselves—a sanctuary for creativity, advocacy, and radical inclusion.

We’ve faced challenges, but the foundation of our work is unshakable: the belief that everyone deserves a space to thrive. Alexandra’s decision to hold the building in trust wasn’t just about ownership—it was about creating a legacy. A place where people could dream without fear, connect without judgment, and build without limits.

Today, the Autonomy Project is a testament to what can happen when a few determined people come together to create something extraordinary. It’s a space built by fems and thems, for all of us—and we’re just getting started. Join us as we continue to build, dream, and fight for a future where everyone has the autonomy to live authentically.

our mission

The Autonomy Project exists to create safe, inclusive spaces where marginalized communities can thrive. We empower LGBTQIA+ individuals, sex workers, BIPOC folks, creatives, and all who seek connection and expression through education, advocacy, and community-driven programming. By fostering resilience, amplifying diverse voices, and championing the right to explore freely, we build a world where everyone has the autonomy to dream, grow, and belong.

DONATE FOR AUTONOMY

OUR VISION

The vision of the Autonomy Project is a world where every individual, particularly those from historically marginalized communities, has the space and support to connect, create, and thrive. By building radically inclusive and community-driven spaces, we aim to foster environments where diversity is celebrated, voices are heard, and true inclusivity is achieved. Our focus is not solely on the physical or programmatic spaces we develop but also on cultivating the values of equity, autonomy, and mutual care within these spaces.

HOW WE BUILD IT-- TOGETHER

CENTRAL TO OUR VISION

Our vision extends to the methodologies we employ—collaborative, transparent, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Every step taken is a collective stride towards more just and vibrant communities. We engage in continuous dialogue, participatory design, and shared governance to ensure that our processes are as inclusive and empowering as our goals.

Radical Inclusivity

We envision spaces where everyone, regardless of their background, identity, or experiences, is welcomed and valued. These are places where barriers are dismantled, and access is universal, allowing for full participation in all aspects of community and creative life.

Community-Driven Initiatives

Our vision includes a collaborative approach to creating and managing spaces, where decisions are made collectively by those it impacts the most. We believe in harnessing the power of community to drive initiatives that are responsive to their needs and aspirations, ensuring that our projects are not just for the community but shaped by them.

Focus on Historically Marginalized Groups

Recognizing that some communities have been disproportionately excluded and oppressed, our vision prioritizes these groups to ensure they have equal opportunities to lead, create, and benefit from our projects. This commitment to equity is foundational, guiding all strategic decisions and operations.

Rejecting Exploitative Systems

Our vision is grounded in the rejection of systems and structures that exploit, exclude, or erase individuals or groups. We commit to challenging these systems through alternative models that emphasize fairness, transparency, and cooperative practices.

Cultivating Autonomy and Mutual Care

We strive to empower individuals within our spaces to take charge of their own lives, decisions, and creations while fostering a culture of mutual care. This means supporting one another’s autonomy in a framework that recognizes our interconnectedness and the strength that comes from caring collectively.

Holistic Impact

Our work seeks to impact individuals holistically, addressing not just economic or creative needs but also enhancing well-being, providing educational opportunities, and fostering a sense of belonging and identity.

Board of Directors

The Autonomy Project is governed by a dedicated board of directors comprised of community leaders, activists, and professionals who are deeply committed to our mission.

We believe in empowering people to make a difference

Do-ocracy in action

Our organizational ethos encourages all members to propose, lead, and execute projects. This approach not only democratizes our operations but also ensures that those involved are passionate and personally invested in their work. It aligns with our anti-capitalist values by emphasizing communal benefit and personal fulfillment over hierarchical profit motives. The Autonomy Project adopts a "middle-out" hierarchy structure that aligns with our anti-capitalist values by promoting equity, collective decision-making, and the decentralization of power within the organization. This approach is designed to empower all members of the team, regardless of their official position, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that challenges traditional hierarchical models.

OUR IMPACT

The tangible effects our impact are often hard to quantify, because empowerment isn't a number on a sheet, it's something fragile that must be nurtured against all odds. Our deepest work exists in the way we support our community and one another.
